The Infectious Diseases Division at Minor & James Medical cares for persons with a wide range of Infectious Diseases requiring specialized care, sometimes in conjunction with surgeons, primary care doctors, or specialists. Not infrequently the diagnosis is not established at the time of referral. Many patients can be treated out of the hospital with either intravenous or oral antibiotics.
We are frequently consulted by patients to evaluate acute or chronic skin, joint, or bone infections not responding to initial therapies. Some patients have fevers of unknown origin. Some have identified persistent viral infections such as Herpes, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C. Some have issues regarding chronic fungal infections. International travelers frequently seek pre-travel healthcare advice and at times return with tropical diseases needing treatment.
Comprehensive care of patients with AIDS and HIV infection is a sub-specialty of ours. We also treat infections in persons immunocompromised by cancer or by medications used for organ transplantation, lupus, or other immunologic disorders. Patients with diabetes frequently have complex foot infections. We also see patients with a variety of other conditions including but not limited to infections after surgery, heart valve infections (endocarditis), sinusitis, pneumonia, infectious diarrhea, animal bites, sexually transmitted diseases, complex urinary tract infections, chronic foot infections, infections involving artificial joints or other orthopedic devices, or persons exposed to communicable diseases requiring preventive medications or vaccinations. |
